How
Gifted Are You?
Sometime ago I devised an instrument that was used in a private
school setting to select students for an honors program.
The program criteria included a 3.0 GPA or higher, an 85th
percentile or above in Total Reading and Total Math on the Stanford
Achievement Test, teacher recommendation, parent recommendation, and
the completion of a brief experimental screen for gifted personality
characteristics.
The following is an abbreviated version of the personality screen
and includes only those items which discriminated well between gifted
and non-gifted students. Directions:
Use the following rating scale to indicate your level of behavior
on each item below. 0
= Never Insert
the numbered response in the blank.
Directions for scoring the screen will be given at the conclusion
of this evaluation. (A)
I _____ strive toward perfection (B) I am _____ uninhibited in expressing opinions (C) I _____ cooperate with peers (D) I _____ speak directly to the point (A)
I am _____ self-assertive (B) I am _____ a high risk taker (C) I _____ adapt to new situations (D) I _____ write directly to the point (A)
I _____ like organization and structure (B) I _____ criticize constructively (C) I _____ enjoy being around other people (D) I _____ draw upon a large vocabulary of synonyms to express fine shades of meaning Directions
for Scoring the Gifted Personality Screen:
Add up all the points for A and write that number on the line
provided. Do the same for
B, C, and D statements. When
through total all the points. Refer
to the Norms Table to determine your level of personality giftedness. Total
points for A statements: _____ Norms: Based on 28 teacher-rated protocols, the following Scale is
experimental in its design and norms.
